SOUTHEN-ON-SEA, ESSEX – In a move set to redefine grocery shopping in Essex, local entrepreneur and practicing Muslim Sadiq Smith has announced the grand opening of his new halal supermarket, Halaldi.

From our consumer correspondent: Colin Allcabs

Smith proudly told the SUFFOLK GAZETTE: “HALALDI is about bringing halal food to everyone in Essex and hopefully beyond in the future, maybe even in Suffolk.”

For the uninitiated, Halal is an Arabic term that translates to English as “permissible,” as described in the Quran. It is contrasted with Haram, which means “forbidden.” This simple dichotomy has evolved into a nuanced classification system known as “the five decisions”: obligatory, recommended, neutral, reprehensible, and forbidden.

Damn hell!

Halaldi is not just a regular grocery store with everyday groceries at great prices. Oh no, Smith has taken it to the extreme and added a number of exotic and unusual items to their range that most people in Essex or the UK as a whole would be surprised to learn are halal. The range includes quail, cranes, weaver birds, grasshoppers, ruddy geese, blue-necked birds (subzak, neel kanth), parrots and, perhaps most amazingly, zebras!

“We want to educate and delight our customers about the variety of halal options available,” explained Smith. “At Halaldi, you’ll find everything from everyday essentials to unique and exotic meats that meet halal standards. It’s like Noah’s Ark, but with a knife and fork!”

Essex resident Betty Butterworth exclaimed: “I have lived here all my life, but I never thought I could buy a parrot for dinner!”

Halal supermarket

When Halaldi opens its doors, shoppers can look forward to an unprecedented mix of affordability, variety and the novelty of discovering an extensive range of halal foods, from the everyday to the exotic. Whether you’re looking for a regular loaf of bread or considering a zebra stew, Halaldi has everything you need.
