Is Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer’s job safe?
Is Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer’s job safe?

College football has gone through a lot of changes in recent seasons. New rules, a completely reformatted College Football Playoff, a wide-open transfer portal, and a realignment of the entire conference. However, one of the biggest changes for the 2024 season will be the fact that the legendary Nick Saban will no longer coach the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Saban announced his retirement shortly after the conclusion of the 2023 season, and Alabama wasted no time finding his successor. Former Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer is now at the helm of the Crimson Tide program.

Expectations are a little more muted for DeBoer in his first season, but with what he brought, there is still a belief that the team should not only compete to make the College Football Playoffs, but that Alabama can also compete for the national championship.

If the worst-case scenario becomes a reality for the Crimson Tide in 2024, what does that mean for DeBoer? Well, Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports states that the situation “could be all good… for now.”

Dodd recently assigned all 134 FBS college football head coaches a rating based on the likelihood of them being in the “hot seat” for the upcoming season. For those who aren’t sure what that means, it’s simply how likely the coach in question is to be fired for poor performance.

DeBoer’s job is more than secure even if the season doesn’t end the way fans hope. With such a drastic change, there are bound to be some obstacles. But that’s not a free pass for DeBoer to have a losing season or be an ineffective head coach. It just means he has some flexibility, even if his first season doesn’t pick up exactly where Saban left off.
