Asian Community Fund awards 0,000 to Massachusetts nonprofits

The Boston Foundation’s Asian Community Fund announced Wednesday that 52 nonprofit organizations serving Asian American Pacific Islanders in Massachusetts will receive grants totaling $450,000.

Financing is one way to address inequities in investments for Asian Americans; less than 1 percent of philanthropic giving over the past 30 years has gone to AAPI organizations and causes, according to a Boston Foundation grant announcement. The Asian Community Fund has disbursed more than $1 million since launching the grant program in 2022, the announcement said.

“Asians have the largest intragroup wealth gap that exists, so we are not a monolith,” said Danielle Kim, ACF’s executive director. “I think about the important work our community organizations do to ensure that every Asian resident in our region feels seen, heard and valued.”

The fund, Kim said, will use the investments to support underserved and underrepresented ethnic groups, organizations from diverse geographic areas, and nonprofits that empower the AAPI community.

After hearing feedback from 37 community reviewers, ACF selected nonprofits working in a variety of areas, including: arts and culture, business outreach and entrepreneurship, civic engagement, cultural heritage, education and youth, health equity and elder care, and mental and psychological health.

Kim said the decision on which recipients should receive grants was in line with a recent report by the Asian Business Empowerment Council, which was formed within the ACF. The report found that investing in economic development organizations was a critical way to support AAPI entrepreneurs.

“We also knew that issues related to mental and psychological health continued to be a key challenge and need. And in particular, I also think that the arts and cultural work that ACF has invested in is critical to AAPI representation, visibility and belonging,” Kim said. “So those are ultimately the categories that our grantee partners ultimately aligned around.”

Grantees include the Asian American Ballet Project, the Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts, the Asian American Women’s Political Initiative, the TurkicStan Center, Enhance Asian Community on Health Inc., and the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence.

“The Asian American community here in Greater Boston has been overlooked and unrecognized for far too long, yet there is incredible and important work being done locally in the diverse Asian communities in our region,” Kim said. “I think this announcement is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the growing local AAPI community.”
