Michigan Democrats defend President Joe Biden amid doubts about his re-election

DETROIT – As Democrats call on President Joe Biden to end his re-election campaign, leaders of Michigan’s Democratic Party are coming to his aid.

“Ultimately, the president will be the nominee and we will be there to make sure he wins in November,” said Wayne County Commissioner Jonathan Kinloch.

Kinloch is the chairman of the Democratic Party’s 13th Congressional District.

Biden has said he is staying in the race despite concerns within the party about his performance in the debates and his ability to campaign and govern if re-elected.

“Someone is having a bad day and suddenly we want to throw them overboard,” Kinloch said.

So far, only a handful of Democrats in Congress have publicly called on Biden to abandon his re-election campaign. None of them represent Michigan.

“I support President Biden 100%,” said Rep. Shri Thanedar. “He is our best chance, our best hope to defeat Donald Trump.”

Thanedar says he plans to greet Biden at DTW when he arrives in Detroit for his campaign appearance on Friday (July 12).

Rep. Haley Stevens addressed concerns among some Democrats in Congress that Biden as their nominee could harm their race.

“I remain very enthusiastic,” Stevens said. “I know we are in a difficult situation. People are nervous.”

Rep. Debbie Dingell appeared on CNN and tried to refocus the party’s attention on the likely Republican nominee.

“For 13 days, Donald Trump and the Republicans have enjoyed every minute of this debate,” Dingell said. “We as a party, as politicians, need to start talking again about what is at stake in November.”

“I have full confidence in President Biden, and here in Michigan, we are not worried, we are working to defeat Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans this November. The facts are clear: Joe Biden spent his entire life serving this country, while Trump spent his entire life serving himself. The Biden-Harris administration took on the pharmaceutical industry, sided with union members, and made the largest federal investment in infrastructure in a generation – while Trump and his MAGA allies in the state have laid out a clear plan to take control of Michiganders’ lives and drag us back in time. I am confident Michigan will send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris back to the White House this November and vote Democrat across the ballot.”
