Do you see a child from Idaho with a towel around his shoulders? Pull him through

It’s a well-known fact that most children love splashing around in water: in swimming pools, lakes, streams, in the bathtub! There’s nothing better than a good Free Willy moment when you’re very young.

But there is a seemingly harmless thing that many parents do that can be life-threatening for their little ones: They wrap a towel around their arms and shoulders while swimming or playing by the water.

How many of us quickly wrap our children in a warm, cozy towel when they stand there shivering with purple lips and shriveled fingers? Yet we must absolutely resist the urge to turn them into cute burritos, lol.

Until recently, we had no idea how dangerous it was!

Nikki Scarnati, the mom who went viral on TikTok for educating us about the dangers of blue, white and nude swimsuits, is once again making waves with more pool and water wisdom.

Wrapping a towel tightly around their arms can put them at risk of drowning. *If* they fall into a body of water, or even a shallow bathtub, for example, the tight wrapping of their arms can make it almost impossible for them to move and stay afloat.

Nikki’s warning was a heartbreaking and eye-opening revelation for us.

This is why it is SO, SO, SO important for parents – especially parents in Idaho, where there is a river, stream, or pond on every corner – to keep their children’s arms completely free at all times when they are near water.

As parents, our children’s safety is our number one priority. It’s, well, terrifying that so many of us have overlooked this poolside danger for so long. We don’t want to spread panic, but we think this is a damn urgent matter that deserves a lot more attention than it’s getting.

So this summer, and every summer from now on, let us stay true to our commitment to keep our children’s arms free when they are in or around the water.
