(BEACH HAVEN, NJ) — Surflight Theater presents the musical, Unbound from July 9 to 28, 2024. Based on the classic 80s film, the film is about urban teenager Ren, who moves from Chicago to the rural town of Bomont, where the residents have unjustly banned rock’n’roll and dancing. Photographer John Posada was on site to take photos.

Feeling trapped and confused, Ren tries to fit in. But he soon finds himself in trouble when he catches the eye of the beautiful Ariel Moore, the preacher’s daughter. In order to convince the town council to lift the ban on dancing, Ren now has no choice but to fight against prejudice and the community’s fiery preacher by dancing. But is Ren’s fight hopeless?

Unbound was nominated for 4 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score. A list of legendary songs includes: Footloose, Holding Out for a Hero, Let’s Hear It for the Boy and many others. With the Unbound With the film celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and it also being the 25th anniversary of the Broadway musical, it is exciting to bring this show back to Surflight. It holds a special place in Surflight history as it was the first show performed in the 2017 comeback season with the return of producing artistic director Steve Steiner!
