Murphy went to Utah and then to Germany

Governor Phil Murphy will travel to Utah and Germany next week as he attends a meeting of national governors and tries to attract international companies to New Jersey.

Murphy’s public schedule says Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way will take office as acting governor Wednesday night, when Murphy heads to Salt Lake City to attend the National Governors Association’s annual summer convention. Murphy will then fly to Germany on Friday with Choose New Jersey, the Garden State’s business attraction group.

According to his public schedule, Murphy will return to New Jersey next Tuesday.

Way traveled to Puerto Rico on Tuesday to attend the National Association of Secretaries of State’s summer conference. She returns today and is expected to be back in New Jersey before Murphy’s departure.

Murphy has a keen interest in building relationships with other governors. The NGA, which Murphy chaired in 2022 and 2023, will host a series of events at the Grand America Hotel on Thursday and Friday. Murphy also chaired the Democratic Governors Association twice, in 2020 and 2023.

Murphy will then travel familiar territory in Germany with Choose New Jersey, which maintains a trade mission in Berlin. Murphy, who was US ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013, last visited Germany last February as a delegate to the Munich Security Conference. In 2018, Murphy also traveled to Germany and Israel as part of a trade mission.
