Judith Anne Kelley – Duluth News Tribune

Judith A. Kelley, 74, of Duluth, MN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on June 30, 2024.

Judy was born on October 11, 1949 to Lawrence and Lorraine (Hagen) Estness and graduated from Hermantown High School. She will be remembered as an incredibly loving and caring person, not only to her family, but to everyone she knew. Judy was the glue that held the family together.

Judy’s quality as a caregiver was a defining characteristic. She operated a daycare center in her own home for nearly 35 years. At the end of the day, she worked as a school bus attendant, which gave her extra time with the children. Many of the families she worked with remembered her many years later and stayed in touch. After caring for her grandchildren, Judy retired, but that didn’t stop her from caring for her great-grandchildren until the end.

Everyone says their mother is the best, so we can say that Judith was the best mother Scott could have had. It is not easy to lose parents or family members, but we cannot imagine a day without them in our lives. There is no one who has known Judy who will not miss her. Thank you for everything, mother, and go in peace and with our love.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Diane Qualey, her brother Randy Estness, and the love of her life, her husband Garrett Kelley.

Survivors include son Scott (Jane Erickson) Kelley, grandchildren Luke (Makayla) and Kirsten Kelley, great-grandchildren Blake and Hunter, brother Gordon (Ann) Estness, and nieces Connie Hipple, Christy Peterson and Cindy Davis.

The funeral service will take place on Friday, July 12th at 2 p.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery – Duluth. Pastor Christoph Schmidt will lead the funeral service.

Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.
