Pokes Football: The Best of Colorado

LARAMIE – No other state has been a bigger breeding ground for newcomers to the University of Wyoming than Colorado.

This list will prove it.

Numerous UW Hall of Famers, NFL stars and program record-holders began their football careers in that square of the South. The Cowboys’ biggest rival, Colorado State, overlooked many of those guys. The same was true of CU. Air Force even fell short of winning once or twice.

Some simply preferred Laramie to Fort Collins, Boulder and Colorado Springs.

This summer, with the help of some longtime Wyoming football fans, we’ll be counting down the top 25 Colorado products in the program’s history. As always, it doesn’t matter what these guys accomplished in professional football. This is all about the production in Laramie.

Linebacker, 1985–88, Aurora, Colorado

Resume in Laramie

The Aurora, Colorado product made 106 of those stops as a junior. The following year, he was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference First Team and earned honorable mention All-American honors. Most importantly, Schenbeck led the Cowboys to two consecutive WAC titles under new head coach Paul Roach, anchoring a dominating defense featuring players like Mitch Donahue, Galand Thaxton, Eric Coleman, Pat Rabold and many others. Wyoming went to consecutive Holiday Bowls, losing to Iowa and Oklahoma State, respectively. Schenbeck played for three different head coaches in Laramie, starting with Al Kincaid before spending a season with Dennis Erickson. Schenbeck was inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.

About Aurora

Aurora has a population of nearly 387,000 and is spread across three counties in the Denver suburbs. This population makes the city the third largest in the state. Aurora, also known as the “Gateway to the Rockies,” stretches to the eastern plains. Zachery Ty Bryan (actor – Hammer and Hammer) once lived here. So did Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and John Kerry (politician).

The 50 best football players at the University of Wyoming

The rules are simple: What impact did the player have in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolades he received outside of UW are irrelevant to this list.

This is not a job for one person. This task required a panel of experts. In addition to Cody Tucker from 7220, Robert Gagliardi, Jared Newland, Ryan Thorburn, And Kevin McKinney.

We’ve all compiled our own list of 50 and let the computer averages do the work. Think BCS – we just hope this catalog is fairer.
