Utah will face Miami at the 2027 Vegas Kickoff Classic

The 2027 college football season will begin with a highly anticipated showdown between the Utah Utes and the University of Miami Hurricanes. Dubbed the “Battle of the ‘U’ Sign,” this opening game will take place during the Kickoff Classic on Labor Day weekend at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Although the exact date and time have not yet been confirmed, excitement is already building around this game.

Utah athletic director Mark Harlan expressed his excitement for the opportunity and emphasized the national stage the game provides the Utes. “This is a great showcase for our football program and our university,” Harlan said. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Las Vegas Bowl and ESPN Events in making this event possible and assured fans that Allegiant Stadium will once again be ablaze with the Utes’ red.

Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich echoed Harlan’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of playing against a notable non-league opponent at such a prestigious venue. Radakovich noted that this game offers Miami fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to support their team at a world-class venue.

The University of Miami football program has a storied history with five national championships, the most recent of which was won in 2001. Led by head coach Mario Cristobal, the Hurricanes look to improve on their 7-6 record beginning with the 2023 season. Cristobal, who previously coached at Oregon, brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the Miami program.

Utah, on the other hand, has a strong record at Allegiant Stadium, winning two Pac-12 championships there in 2021 and 2022. Despite suffering a setback against Northwestern in the Las Vegas Bowl last December, the Utes are optimistic about the future. They are favorites to win the Big 12 Conference in 2024, making their debut season in the league.

John Saccenti, general manager of the Vegas Kickoff Classic and SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl, highlighted the uniqueness of this first-time meeting, saying that games like this capture the attention of college football fans across the country.

“We have a regular in our Utah city playing for the first time in one of the biggest football arenas in the world against a national brand like Miami,” Saccenti noted.

The “Battle of the ‘U’” symbolizes the meeting of the “U” of the West and the “U” of the South against the backdrop of Las Vegas, the sports and entertainment capital of the world.

The tension is building in this historic matchup between the Utah Utes and the Miami Hurricanes. This game promises to be an exciting start to the college football season, showcasing top-notch talent and school pride in an electric atmosphere.
