Greenfield murder suspect returned to Massachusetts for arraignment

GREENFIELD, Massachusetts (WWLP) – A man arrested in New York state and wanted in connection with a murder in Greenfield was extradited to Massachusetts on Monday.

On April 22, Greenfield police were called to a Chapman Street apartment after a foul odor was reported. When officers entered the home, they found a body lying on the floor. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Christopher Hairston, formerly of Pittsfield and Greenfield.

The following day, an arrest warrant was issued against the former tenant, 42 years old. Taaniel L. Herberger-BrownHe was found in his vehicle in a parking garage at Albany International Airport, arrested and charged with fugitive from justice.

According to the police report, Herberger-Brown told investigators he was at the airport because he wanted to visit his mother abroad. However, the suspect mentioned several different destinations, including Germany, Vancouver, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.

He allegedly told police that he got into a physical altercation with an unknown person who broke into his apartment. Herberger-Brown said he believed the intruder was on drugs and said he died after the altercation because his “heart stopped.” Afterward, Herberger-Brown said, he left the apartment to get a tire changed. Police could not determine exactly when this alleged altercation occurred.

Laurie Loisel, spokeswoman for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, told 22News that Herberger-Brown is still being held at the Franklin County Jail and Correctional Facility pending his arraignment Tuesday morning. He is being represented by Springfield attorney Nicholas.
