MassDEP: Contractor to demolish general chemical warehouse in Framingham

FRAMINGHAM – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has announced that a contractor will begin demolishing a warehouse building on the former General Chemical site in Framingham.

The demolition contractor is currently working with the City of Framingham authorities to obtain all necessary demolition permits, including permits to terminate utility services.

The contractor plans to begin preparatory work on the site during the week of July 8, including the installation of temporary fencing and erosion control measures, with this work expected to be completed by mid-July.

Demolition of the warehouse is expected to begin in late July or early August and be completed before the first day of school. The former General Chemical site is located next to Harmony Grove Elementary School.

As explained at a public meeting on 4 June, the demolition works will be carried out in accordance with standard industry practices and all appropriate measures will be taken during the demolition to ensure that there are no impacts outside the property while these works are being carried out.

After the warehouse is demolished, MassDEP may conduct additional subsurface testing, including collecting soil and groundwater samples, to determine the location and extent of contamination within the warehouse footprint.

This information will help MassDEP develop the most effective remediation plan possible. The contamination is expected to be remediated by summer 2025.

Questions may be directed to Andrew Friedmann of the MassDEP at 617-894-3543 or via email at [email protected].
