Sherrill’s statement on Gateway Tunnel funding

LIVINGSTON, NJ – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement welcoming an agreement reached between New Jersey, New York and the federal government to fully fund the Gateway Tunnel project:

“This hard-fought agreement means more good-paying, union jobs are coming to New Jersey. I fought tooth and nail to get federal funding to build the Gateway Tunnel, which will bring our infrastructure into the 21st century and improve the quality of life and economic opportunity for millions of families in our region. From reducing traffic and air pollution to shortening commute times to ensuring the reliability of our public transit so parents can get home to coach their kids’ soccer teams, the impact of the Gateway Tunnel on New Jersey families will be immense – and I’m proud of our work to continue to grow New Jersey’s economy for all of our families.”

Since taking office, completing the Gateway Tunnel Project, the nation’s most important infrastructure project, has been one of Congresswoman Sherrill’s top priorities. She led the lobbying and voting for the bipartisan infrastructure bill that provides $66 billion in funding for passenger rail projects. She testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in 2019 and 2021 to urge them to fully fund Gateway, and led outreach to FRA Administrator Bose in 2023 to strongly advocate for grants for the first project within Gateway. She led letters to Transportation Secretary Buttigieg in 2021 and 2022 urging the speedy completion of the Environmental Impact Statement and other permits for Gateway.
