Did this study correctly select Iowa’s signature drink?
Did this study correctly select Iowa’s signature drink?

Sun out, drinks out!

I know that’s not quite the saying, but there’s something about enjoying your favorite beverage on the beach, boat, or porch while soaking up the sun. July is the warmest month of the year, and it’s also the month when Iowa’s summer weather peaks.

If you’re looking to spend an afternoon drinking with your family and friends or going out on a Friday/Saturday night, I’d love to know what your favorite drink is. I’d bet that most people who drink alcohol have one or more favorite drinks that they usually stick to. Of course, you might try something different from time to time, but if you could only drink one type of drink for the rest of your life, what would it be?

For many Iowa beer drinkers, the answer is Busch Light. Iowa ships more Busch Light than any other U.S. state, so I’m a little confused by this “study” on each state’s signature drink.

While the selection for Iowa looks delicious, after asking a few colleagues what they would recommend for Iowa, no one chose this drink.

According to Stacker, Iowa’s signature drink is a Frozen Blue Water Margarita. The drink contains tequila, Cointreau and lime. The blue color comes from Blue Curacao. The study claims that “West Okoboji Lake is one of Iowa’s largest claims, and the naturally blue lake is so popular that it inspired Iowa’s signature drink.”

Do Iowans like margaritas? Sure! Hundreds of them are probably drunk daily in Iowa. If you drink alcohol, you’ve probably had a margarita or two in your life, but would you consider this Iowa’s signature drink? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a frozen blue water margarita on a drink menu in the two and a half years I’ve lived in Iowa. I guess I need to start paying closer attention.

The study reportedly used websites, news reports, culinary profiles and historical reports of the states to assign each drink to its respective states.

The study doesn’t just list the alcoholic beverages that are most popular in each state. It looks at all kinds of beverages. For example, there are 19 states where milk is the favorite beverage. In Illinois, Jameson Irish Whiskey is reportedly the most popular drink. Minnesota is one of the 19 states where milk is preferred. Wisconsin’s favorite drink is a Brandy Old Fashioned.

The state of Indiana has its signature drink… water. When I read that, I laughed out loud. How can one state claim water that is drunk every day in every state in America?

Our southern neighbor’s signature drink is Budweiser. Anheuser-Busch is an iconic American brewery founded in St. Louis, Missouri, so this answer seems to fit.

I’m just not 100% convinced about Iowa’s choice of college… What do you think? What do you think would be Iowa’s signature drink?
