Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple was named National Sheriff of the Year.

Apple was selected from more than 3,000 sheriffs across the country.

He will be officially honored at a ceremony in Oklahoma City next week.

He plans to fly out with his wife on a private jet on Saturday morning.

“I’m very honored. I’m very humbled and a little embarrassed. You know, I just don’t like it when everything is around me,” he said.

Apple said it was a big win for the department.

Apple has been with the sheriff’s office for 38 years, starting as a corrections officer in 1987 and rising to deputy sheriff in 2009.

He became sheriff in 2011. He says he is most proud of the homeless shelter he set up in the county jail, which helps people escape crime. Apple is the first sheriff from New York to be named National Sheriff of the Year.
