Alabama citizen hits home run during MLB game at Rickwood Field

Thursday night in Birmingham was a historic evening: Major League Baseball paid homage to the Negro Leagues and the historic Rickwood Field, the oldest professional baseball stadium in the United States.

It was already predictable that it would be a special night for baseball, the city of Birmingham and the entire state of Alabama, but it was made even more special by the passing of Birmingham legend Willie Mays this week. Mays began his professional career in Rickwood with the Birmingham Black Barons. Thursday night’s game was a touching tribute to one of the greatest athletes to come out of not only Alabama, but in all of sports history.

Fittingly, a fellow Alabama native delivered a great game for the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting 3 of 4, including a home run, a double and three RBIs, to help his team to a 6-5 victory over the Giants.

Brendan Donovan, who began his career at Enterprise High School where he grew up, has been with the Cardinals since the start of his major league career in 2022.

Donovan was a star for Enterprise, posting a .467 batting average in his final season in 2015 before heading to South Alabama to play at the collegiate level.

Although Donovan defeated Mays’ former team in San Francisco, the all-time star certainly beamed when he saw the Alabama man perform at Rickwood Field.
