Dallas Cowboys: Is Mike McCarthy really in danger of losing his job before the decisive year?

To say that the last few years have been disappointing for the Dallas Cowboys would be an understatement. Despite finishing the season atop the NFC East with an impressive 12-5 record, the Cowboys faltered again in the playoffs after suffering a heartbreaking loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

The Cowboys are entering a new season with high expectations. That means there is a lot of pressure on the team. So much so that head coach Mike McCarthy is in danger of being fired if he fails to lead his team to triumph in 2024.

Of course, McCarthy will be under a lot of scrutiny for his team’s performance next season, and perhaps even more so this year after the 60-year-old’s disappointing first four years in Dallas.

According to NFL reporter Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, even McCarthy’s past accomplishments might not be enough to save him from being fired if the Cowboys have another forgettable year in 2024:

“McCarthy has big numbers on his resume — lots of regular-season wins, even a past Super Bowl appearance — but only limited support from ownership. Jerry Jones has actually proven more patient than expected in Dallas, but not even three consecutive 12-win seasons have translated into a true playoff run for McCarthy’s Cowboys, which has Jones putting pressure on longtime quarterback Dak Prescott as well. The offense has always hummed pretty well here, but with Dan Quinn no longer overseeing the game-winning defense, all eyes will be on McCarthy, who has only a single playoff win in his last six years as head coach,” Benjamin wrote.

The only playoff win in the last six years is a pretty scary statistic. It just goes to show that McCarthy hasn’t had playoff success in more than half a decade.

The fact that the former Green Bay Packers quarterback has won Super Bowls in the past is proof that he is capable of leading the Cowboys to the promised land, but whether he will be given more time to do so after this season is another question entirely.
