Jets release CB Tae Hayes after marijuana arrest in Alabama

The Jets have released cornerback Tae Hayes, who was arrested in Alabama over the weekend for marijuana possession.

The team confirmed his release in an online post on Monday afternoon, but did not go into details.

Hayes, 26, was arrested at 3:46 a.m. Sunday and released at 5:07 a.m. on $300 bail, according to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office online records.

According to records, he was arrested by Trinity police for second-degree marijuana possession. Marijuana is decriminalized in Alabama for medicinal purposes only.

Hayes is from nearby Decatur, Alabama.

The Jets signed Hayes to their practice squad on Oct. 3 and used him in one game last season – an Oct. 15 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Hayes had two tackles in the 20-14 victory. The Jets re-signed Hayes to a futures contract in January.

Hayes played 14 games for six teams over the course of four NFL seasons, recording 18 tackles, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery.

He played college football at Appalachian State before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. Hayes also played for the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots.
